Welcome to the Institute of Meteoritics

The Institute of Meteoritics (IOM), founded in 1944, was the first institution in the world devoted exclusively to the study of meteorites and has over the past 80 years expanded its mission to become one of the leading centers for research on planetary materials and participation in NASA's exploration of the solar system. The IOM Meteorite Museum is located on the ground floor of Northrop Hall, UNM Main Campus, and is open to the public. The Museum features a unique collection of over 2000 meteorites, most of which are extremely rare and highly valuable research objects, including samples from Mars, the Moon, and other solar system bodies.
